Why Teach in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong offers some of the highest ESL salaries in Asia. The bilingual environment means most locals already speak some English, and the territory's international schools and learning centers cater to a broad student base. Public transit covers every corner, and the airport makes regional travel easy during breaks.

Salary & Benefits

Language center positions typically pay HK$18,000-30,000 per month (approximately $2,300-$3,850 USD), while the government's NET (Native English Teacher) Scheme in public schools offers HK$30,000-60,000+ depending on qualifications and experience. Housing is by far the biggest expense in Hong Kong, with a one-bedroom apartment in areas like Sai Ying Pun or Tai Kok Tsui running HK$14,000-20,000 per month, so many teachers share apartments or live in the New Territories where rents drop significantly. Most contracts include annual leave plus Hong Kong's 17 public holidays. Employers are required to make MPF (Mandatory Provident Fund) pension contributions of 5% on top of your salary.

Teaching Opportunities

The NET Scheme is the most sought-after route, placing native English speakers in government and aided primary and secondary schools across the territory. Applications open annually and are competitive. Private language centers are the most accessible entry point, with employers like International House, British Council, and the English Language Centre hiring regularly. International schools such as ESF, Harrow Hong Kong, and German Swiss International School pay well but typically require a formal teaching license. University language programs at HKU, CUHK, and HKUST offer limited positions for experienced instructors. Private tutoring is a lucrative side income, with rates of HK$300-500 per hour for one-on-one lessons. Note that all teaching positions in Hong Kong require a work visa sponsored by your employer before you can begin working.
