Why Teach in Taiwan?

Taiwan has a solid ESL market with competitive pay relative to the cost of living. The National Health Insurance system covers foreign teachers, and processing a work permit is more straightforward than in some neighboring countries. Night markets are part of daily life, and the island's geography means mountains or beaches are never far.

Salary & Benefits

Most English teaching positions in Taiwan pay between NT$55,000 and NT$75,000 per month (roughly $1,750-$2,400 USD). Public school positions recruited through the Ministry of Education typically include a housing allowance or subsidized accommodation, which makes a real difference since rent in Taipei can run NT$15,000-25,000 for a single apartment. Flight reimbursement at the start and end of a one-year contract is standard, and most employers offer a contract completion bonus of around one month's salary. Health insurance is covered through Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) program, which is excellent and costs teachers very little out of pocket.

Teaching Opportunities

The largest employer category is public schools, which hire foreign teachers through annual government recruitment rounds (typically posted between March and June each year). Buxiban, Taiwan's ubiquitous cram schools and tutoring centers, hire year-round and account for a large share of available positions, especially in cities like Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. University language centers at schools like National Taiwan University and National Cheng Kung University offer part-time and full-time roles, often with lighter teaching loads. Private kindergartens and bilingual preschool are another option, particularly in suburban areas. Taiwan stands out for being genuinely welcoming to foreign teachers, with a well-established expat community and active online forums for job seekers.
